MIRS: an interactive journey
exploring radio waves and society.
MIRS – Interactive Museum of Radio and Society was founded by the Municipal Council of Pasiano di Pordenone to share and promote the collection donated by citizen and researcher Pier Giorgio Vendramini.
This thoughtfully composed selection of important historical radios represents a material and intellectual catalogue of technological and cultural development in Italy and around the world.
The exhibition avoids lingering in nostalgia, instead accompanying historical radios with collectors’ materials, experiment points, educational workshops and informative and interactive resources, illustrating how the invention of the radio transformed our society. And how it continues to do so.
Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience and an exhibition that is designed to evolve.
The century of radio
A discovery of the experiments and innovations that defined radio, how it works and its technological development that revolutionised 20th-century communication and society. And continues to do so.
Radio brought the latest news into the home, sharing world events that defined the 20th century. Sometimes a tool to share information, and sometimes to spread propaganda, it became increasingly effective at reaching and guiding the masses.
Radio became a means of mass communication, drawing the world closer to each and every household. From propaganda to entertainment and from music to information, the evolution of codes, terminology and content went hand in hand with changes in society.
Radio has impacted, defined and narrated society, locally and globally. It played a key role in the World Wars, becoming one of the main platforms for political propaganda.
The radio became a functional tool and cult object, conquering a market led by fashions and trends with increasingly original, functional and creative models. Collaborations between manufacturers and industrial designers arose that continue to shape modern tastes.
New broadcasters, new methods and new audiences. These days, we don’t necessarily identify radio with a physical object and take it for granted in new everyday technology. From national broadcasts to smartphones and podcasts, radio waves continue to permeate our present and future.
Highlights
endless lines of cultural discovery.
The radio is an iconic object that has told our stories for decades, reaching every corner of the planet and as many people as possible. This extraordinary medium brought us closer to the voices and great events of the 20th century and the new millennium, making them more tangible for listeners and making radio the most widespread form of mass media in the world.
Despite many technological and communication innovations of recent years, such as social networks, radio continues to evolve in step with society’s needs. It has never gone out of fashion, reaching the impressive milestone of more than a century of history. And radio waves as a technology continue at the forefront of innovation in everyday tools such as smartphones.

Spring 2025
a glimpse into the area’s past.
The rich history of Pasiano di Pordenone is evidenced by numerous archaeological discoveries in various villages and surrounding areas. Documents, material remains and buildings, some of great value, demonstrate the presence of a Roman community in this part of western Friuli during periods of Romanisation (2nd–1st century BC) through to the full imperial age (1st–2nd century AD) and beyond (4th–6th century AD).
MIRS hosts Archeopoint, expanding its cultural resources and workshop programme for schools and families.
